Revolutionary People’s Constitutional Convention

Back in the summer of 1969, the Black Panther Party for Self-Defense held it’s first and only United Front Against Fascism conference. They followed it up in September 1970 with what they called the Revolutionary People’s Constitutional Convention.

The convention was a space for they and their allies to draft an alternative to the US constitution. After all, the Panthers were an organization dedicated to the revolutionary overthrow of capitalism, the US government, the global imperialist system, etc.

Drafting the constitution was their approach to bring people together from across the country and build a massive organization, a revolutionary party. It was meant to make it clear what everyone was fighting for, together.

We need another constitutional convention, this one for a fighting, revolutionary American Commune.

First, check out original constitution the Panther’s drafted with their allies. It’s below.

We’re making a few changes to the constitution that the Panther’s and their allies drafted, as it’s been 50 years since then. When it’s ready, we’ll share it below too. Please don’t think we believe that we have all the answers, because we don’t. This is just the beginning.

It’s one of the reasons why we need community and worker assemblies everywhere! They are the place to discuss drafting a new revolutionary constitution, from the frontlines of struggle.

All Power to the Assemblies!
